About Canberra Public Interest
A civic information site for ACT residents — independent, non-partisan, source-based and plain English.
What is this site?
Canberra Public Interest is an independent civic information site for residents of the Australian Capital Territory. We track public decisions — particularly planning, land use and public consultation matters — and explain them in plain English.
The site is designed to help residents understand what is being proposed, check the source material, and participate in official processes that affect their community.
Who runs it?
This site is operated by Canberra residents with an interest in civic transparency. We are not affiliated with any government body, political party or developer.
Our approach
We follow three principles in everything we publish:
- Accuracy first. We link to source documents wherever possible and clearly identify where evidence is missing, uncertain or still being checked.
- Plain English. We avoid jargon where possible and explain technical terms when they matter.
- Independence. We do not represent any government body, political party, developer or campaign organisation. Where we analyse an issue, we aim to distinguish clearly between source material, public-interest analysis and questions for decision-makers.
What we cover
Our current focus is DPA-14 — a proposed Territory Plan amendment for Block 1653 Belconnen, concerning green waste recycling and bulk landscape supplies.
The DPA-14 hub includes pages on key information, evidence gaps, questions for government, Auditor-General lessons, case studies, submission guidance and source documents.
